Speech and Voice Therapy
Imagine a world where music not only brings joy to our ears but also holds the power to transform lives.
Hi, I’m Piyali, a music coach and therapist with over 20 years of experience. Since Childhood I have been studying music, recitation, dance, drama, and Bratochari. I did my Masters in Music from Rabindra Bharati where I also researched on music therapy.
You see, I began my career by focusing on teaching music grammar and helping students develop their vocal abilities and musical skills. Along the way, I encountered numerous children and adults with speech and voice difficulties. Some had stammering issues, ADHD or autism, learning disabilities, and even some enable to speak at all. They came to me seeking either a hobby extracurricular or were referred by doctors who recognized the benefits of music for concentration and improving their voice.
As a music teacher, I have always believed that teaching music grammar and theory is crucial for a student’s musical growth and development. However, it was only after years of teaching that I realized the potential correlation between music grammar and therapy. This realization led me to explore the world of music therapy, where I discovered how music could be used as a therapeutic tool to improve speech and voice.
In my experience, teaching music grammar and theory has been essential in helping students develop better vocal and speech abilities. Music theory helps students understand the basic components of music, such as rhythm, melody, and harmony. By teaching them these concepts, students learn how to recognize patterns in music and how to apply these patterns to their vocal and speech abilities.
For example, teaching students about rhythm can help them understand the importance of pace and timing in speech. Similarly, teaching them about melody can help them recognize pitch changes in speech, and teaching them about harmony can help them understand how different voices can work together to create a unified sound.
This knowledge of music theory has allowed me to incorporate music therapy techniques into my teaching. By using musical exercises that focus on vocal and speech abilities, I have been able to help students develop their speech and voice in a fun and engaging way.
For instance, I use a simple exercise where I have students sing a simple melody, but I change the lyrics to phrases or sentences that they need to work on. This exercise helps them to focus on pronunciation, dictation, and enunciation in a musical and enjoyable way.
For example, a child who is struggling with stuttering may benefit from an exercise that involves singing a simple melody while speaking the lyrics. This exercise helps to break up the speech pattern, making it easier for the child to speak fluently.
While I don’t claim to be a trained coach or speech therapist, my expertise lies in music and its science. My purpose is to provide an engaging and enjoyable learning experience for children, fostering a supportive and nurturing environment. This is particularly crucial for children who may feel anxious or frustrated about their speech or voice difficulties.
I utilize games and activities that utilize music, rhythm, and rhyme to help children enhance their speech and language skills. Singing songs and chanting rhymes aid in developing phonological awareness and improving pronunciation. Games involving turn-taking, puppets, or role-play enhance social communication skills.
I believe in modeling positive communication behaviors and providing immediate feedback and support. When a child mispronounces a word, I gently correct them and offer positive reinforcement when they get it right. This approach builds confidence and motivation to continue practicing and improving.
If you’re ready to embark on a transformative journey to unlock your voice and overcome speech and voice challenges, I offer personalized one-on-one sessions and classes both online and offline.
